As I left Reno on the Megabus and crossed the Sierras, snowflakes melted quickly on the big landscape window in front of me. Just days before I got my first little sunburn while working in the yard in Reno, where spring is in full flower.

The St. Francis was a luxurious treat. I learned from my mother that treating oneself well when stressed during travel can go a long way toward rescuing the day. So despite the fact that I checked in at 8:30 pm and only had one night, I made the most of it. Slept as long as I wanted, had room-service bring breakfast, ran around luggage-free for the last minute purchases. (Or some of them–I forgot to get some cash and contact lense solution for my carry-on.)
